How To Use Social Media
Greatest Ally or Worst Enemy: You Decide
Gentlemen,
Creation > Consumption.
Creation is man’s calling, consumption is man’s demise.
Human’s have created for all of antiquity through different media: painting on walls, telling stories, building statues, towns, and nations, and even hunting is a form of creation. Social media is simply a medium of our time.
It’s also one of the most powerful mediums ever available to humans. This explains why it has rapidly become a staple in the lives of billions of people. The reality, however, is that it’s been to the detriment of most and to the extreme benefit of some.
Most people mindlessly distract, sedate and negatively program themselves consuming messaging(all content is messaging) on social media - aka the consumers.
If you’re like me, you would like to be a part of the ‘some’ who leverage social media as a tool to enhance their lives - aka the creators.
Step 1 in doing so is shifting the paradigm from consumer to creator.
To optimally leverage social media you must use it as a tool to create - another way of saying this is that you must share a message. Again, all content is messaging.
Step 2 is to actually create. Put your message out there.
This does 2 things:
Delivers your message to people who align with you - bettering their lives
Brings people who align with your message to you - bettering your life
#1 is how you create an audience you can legitimately influence in a positive way and eventually monetize.
#2 is how you create a dense and aligned network of friends, mentors, and associates who are aligned with your vision.
Since I have yet to accomplish #1, I will share my experience with #2.
I began creating(sharing my message) a little over a year ago. Since then:
I work with amazing people I met on social media
I have lived with several friends I met on social media in multiple cities
I have learned from and connected with dozens of talented and wise people
The snowball from this continues to grow
All from putting content into the ether as opposed to solely consuming.
Step 3 is to suck at first and be ok with it.
My friend Nick Rogers(who I met through social media and has built a multi-million dollar business creating content) put it perfectly:
Suck, learn, suck less, learn, suck less, learn until you ultimately refine your message and understanding of the world, build an audience, and acquire valuable skills.
The downstream benefits of doing so include, but are not limited to:
Enhanced communication skills
Enhanced community
Business opportunities
Clarity in your understanding of self and the world
Without question, the intentional use of social media as a medium of creation rather than consumption has bettered my life. I sincerely think it can do the same for you - no matter where you are.
I have friends who have built impactful businesses, become millionaires, built incredible communities, and travelled the world using the incredible blessing that is social media and you can to.
What is one step you can take to begin creating rather than consuming?
What’s a message you want to share with the world?
Caveat: social media can be your greatest ally or your worst enemy. I have learned and implemented several habits/tools that have highly skewed social media in favor of creation and limited my ability to be sucked into the consumption wormhole. These implemenations have helped me tremendously. I’ll share those in detail in a coming newsletter.
I hope this has given you some insights to ponder on how you can better utilize social media as a tool to enhance your life. Send me an email @ [email protected] or connect on Instagram or Twitter if you have any questions - would love to hear from you.
I speak about this with my good friend Coast Brah on this weeks episode of The Tyro Experience podcast. He has travelled the world in his 20s while building a business through social meida that helps men live more vital lives. Watch HERE or listen on Spotify HERE and Apple HERE
Thanks for reading.
